Key Responsibilities

Working as a dental surgery assistant, you will be responsible for the following:

  • The main purpose of this job is to provide chairside clinical assistance to the dentist when he/she is performing dental procedures, to ensure a safe and efficient environment for patients receiving dental care and to be responsible for dental surgery equipment and stock.
  • Materials, supplies, equipment, instruments, and records are prepared and available for the clinic the following day.
  • Immediately prior to each appointment, the surgery is set up with the correct instruments, equipment, records, materials, and supplies for the following patient.
  • Dental chairside assistance is provided to the dentist and patient throughout the entire appointment.
  • The dentist’s instructions are followed, or the needs are anticipated during the procedure. Dental recording and charting are accurately completed from the dentist’s instructions.
  • Hands are washed before and after each patient, and fresh gloves used for each patient.
  • Instruments and equipment are cleaned, sterilised, and set up ready for use according to the practice’s cross infection control procedures, and used supplies are disposed of safely.
  • The primary and secondary work zones of the dental surgery are cleaned and disinfected between patients according to the practice’s cross-infection control procedures.
  • At the end of the day the surgery is cleaned, chair maintenance is completed, windows and blinds are closed and locked, equipment is turned off and the practice is locked.

Additional Tasks

  • You may be asked to perform the duties of a receptionist.
  • Greet all patients courteously and with cultural sensitivity.
  • Assist patients with required forms upon arrival.
  • Check and clear voicemail regularly.
  • Manage patient recalls efficiently.
  • Maintain accurate and organized patient records.
  • Schedule appointments correctly, including non-clinical events.
  • Reschedule and cancel appointments promptly to minimize downtime.
  • Invoice patients post-treatment as directed.
  • Receive and receipt payments or arrange payment plans.
  • Follow up on overdue accounts every two weeks.
  • Understand ACC, MoH, and other dental subsidies.
  • Enter financial and patient data into the system as needed.
  • Back up computer files daily.
  • Complete word processing tasks within one day or sooner if urgent.

Qualifications

To qualify for this job, you will need the following:

  • Minimum qualification higher or equivalent to ANZSCO level 4 or 5
  • Relevant qualification in dental assisting or healthcare support
  • Minimum one year’s experience as a dental surgery assistant is preferred but not essential, as full on-the-job training will be given.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a team
  • strong attention to details and hygiene standards

Certificates, licences, memberships, and courses 

  • Relevant qualification in dental assisting or healthcare support
  • Minimum qualification higher or equivalent to ANZSCO level 4 or 5
